As the manager of the Gray Goats Syndicate, Josh has found a way to combine his passion for racing with a fun, cost-effective approach to ownership.
While Josh is a regular at the track, he missed a big moment on October 3 when Brother Love crossed the line first at Addington.
“Normally, we make every effort to be at the track—that’s what we’re in this game for—but it was a Thursday, and we couldn’t make it,” Josh explains.
A Family Affair
Based in Geraldine, just south of Christchurch, the Gray Goats Syndicate is a close-knit group of four family members: Josh, his wife Katherine, his sister Ange, and his niece Zakiaya.
Their racing journey began with a simple goal: to make days at the races even more exciting.
"We just wanted a cost-effective way to enhance a day out at the races through ownership,” says Josh. “We started looking at stables on social media after the yearling sales, then connected with Gavin Smith and eventually jumped on board with Brother Love."
The syndicate’s first horse, Brother Love—a five-year-old by Love You—has already exceeded expectations. With 44 starts and five wins, he’s given the family plenty to cheer about.
"It's been a great ride. A lot of horses never even make it to the track, so to have five wins with our first horse is amazing."
Big Wins on a Budget
The Gray Goats have since expanded their involvement in racing, proving you don’t need deep pockets to enjoy success. One of their standout purchases was Olives Dream, a bargain buy from Gavelhouse.
"Our 10% share cost just $70, and she’s already won twice—once at Timaru and once at Winton," says Josh. "The buzz of seeing a $700 horse succeed has been so satisfying for everyone involved."
Their latest venture? A promising Always B Miki colt currently in training with Brent and Tim White in Ashburton.
More Than Just Racing
For Josh and his family, ownership is about more than the wins. It’s about the memories, the camaraderie, and the joy of being part of the sport.
The Gray Goats Syndicate is proof that harness racing can be accessible, fun, and deeply rewarding—even on a budget.
